The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Technical Assistant III who will participate and assist in all forage regeneration and characterization field activities at the forage diversity project.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Records monthly field observation and characterization data;
  • Assists in management of field genebank and collection of data from field;
  • Takes herbarium specimens;
  • Monitors plants for pests and diseases and takes remedial action;
  • Maintains plots weed free and labelled and collects seeds
  • Assists in forage training activities;
  • Assists in general implementation of research activities at the site;
  • Other related duties as required by the supervisor.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • High school completed Or Diploma from a recognized university/college in Plant Science or Horticulture or Crop Production  
  • Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment

Experience:

  • High school completed plus certificate in relevant field and three years relevant experience in seed production, crop production, field experiment or genetic resources activities

Or

  • Diploma in relevant field with one year relevant experience in seed production, crop production, field experiment or genetic resources activities
  • Experience on forage crops is an advantageous

Skills:

  • Good understanding of forage agronomy and forage seed production
  • Effective communication in English and interpersonal skills
  • Rigorous approach to monitoring progress of tasks
  • Ability to drive a motorbike will be an advantage

Duty Station:    Bishoftu/Debre Zeit, Ethiopia

Grade:  HG 09

Minimum Base Salary:  

  • Birr 20,295 per month

Terms of appointment:  This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site .
