The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) seeks to recruit a Research Project Coordinator who will provide support to the Climate Action lever in Ethiopia though coordinating the execution and implementation of day-to-day project activities related to de-risking and digitalizing by Integrating Climate Risk Management Across Agriculture Commercialization Cluster (ACC) to build resilience and improve productivity, and vulnerability assessment

The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to deliver research-based solutions that address the global crises of malnutrition, climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. The Alliance focuses on the nexus of agriculture, nutrition, and environment. We work with local, national, and multinational partners across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and with the public and private sectors and civil society. With novel partnerships, the Alliance generates evidence and mainstreams innovations to transform food systems and landscapes so that they sustain the planet, drive prosperity, and nourish people. The Alliance is organized into six key levers: 1)Food environment and consumer behavior - reshaping the food environment and consumer behavior toward healthy and sustainable diets; 2) Multifunctional landscapes - fostering innovation for environmental health and productive landscapes to improve livelihoods; 3) Climate action - mainstreaming climate action in the food system to reduce risks; 4) Biodiversity for food and agriculture - making agricultural and tree diversity available and safeguarding it for the diverse needs of food system actors; 5) Digital inclusion - promoting inclusion in the digital agriculture revolution for equitable benefits; and 6) Crops for nutrition and health - putting nutrition and health at the heart of crop improvement to address the triple burden of malnutrition. The job will provide support to the Climate Action lever in Ethiopia through coordinating the execution and implementation of day-to-day project activities related with de-risk and digitalize production and supply chains to build resilience and improve productivity, and vulnerability assessment.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Analyze case studies from various countries to develop policy recommendations for the strategic objective of the project to mainstream climate change in Agriculture Commercialization Cluster (ACC) of the Ethiopian Agriculture Transformation Institute.
  • Lead and undertake qualitative and quantitative risk and vulnerability assessment for multiple climate hazards and adaptation mechanism in the implementation areas;
  • Evaluate perceived weaknesses and strengths of existing products and services for risk management and planning;
  • Lead and conduct climate risk analysis at the different spatial scale and identify potential strategies to build resilient food systems;
  • Develop climate risk and credit analysis and develop climate credit scoring tools for de-risking;
  • Prepare a comprehensive SWOT analysis report that includes a list of potential interventions for risk management and planning in ACC and beyond;
  • Conduct a needs assessment to identify the specific training needs of stakeholders regarding the use of the climate risk management decision support system;
  • Develop a comprehensive training program that covers the key aspects on agricultural de-risking;
  • Link climate risk analysis with existing climate risk finance mechanism identify potential climate credit risk scoring tool;
  • Conduct literature review and workshop on climate risk financing mechanism in Ethiopia and explore best experiences related with climate credit risk scoring (Zambia and Kenya);
  • Develop the capacity building of stakeholders to improve their understanding of climate smart agriculture and climate risk and potential adaptation and mitigation solutions;
  • Work with farmers and pastoralists, their representatives, and other key stakeholders to improve uptake of products/ technologies/innovations developed under climate action lever;
  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary and applied research program on resilience in drylands, investigating the link between climate change, digital inclusion, climate security, rangeland productivity, water resource management, and livelihood impact;
  • Support the development of project deliverables including reporting, enabling digital platforms, and communicating findings to stakeholders;
  • Lead and contribute to resource mobilization through significant input to proposal development;
  • Lead major scientific publication in peer reviewed journals, analyse data to produce high quality and technical report including developing situational analysis related to drought and other factors;
  • Contribute to the fulfilment, in a timely and accurate fashion, of the various mandatory reporting requirements for the ongoing climate action lever activities in Ethiopia; and
  • Support the dissemination of project results through available stakeholder platforms including presentations and reports;
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Masters’ degree or PhD degree in a relevant field of study such as social science, rural development, climate smart agriculture, finance and economics, environmental sciences, climate change and adaptation, or related field
  • In depth knowledge in a technical or specialized field

Experience:

  • Master’s degree with nine years’ of relevant experience or PhD degree with two years’ of relevant professional experience in social science, climate credit scoring, financial and insurance product development, statistical modelling, development and climate vulnerability assessment, climate smart agriculture, environmental and socio-economic variables
  • Working experience in and understanding of CGIAR organizations will be an added advantage.

Skills:

  • Experience in application of mathematical, statistical, and modelling tools and climate vulnerability analysis.
  • Deep understanding of climate credit scoring and climate smart agriculture and climate risk profiling.
  • Considerable in social science (economics) with a good understanding of agropastoral and pastoral production systems in drylands of Ethiopia
  • Proven experience in analytical and problem solving, digital technology, dashboard development, database management and manipulation.
  • Strong record of high-quality scientific publication and experience in producing training materials.
  • Experience in Python, R and open-source coding to undertake extensive data analytics and modelling to perform assigned duties.
  • Good team player with excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong communication, writing and presentation skills in English and knowledge of local languages

Duty Station:    Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level:   HG 16

Minimum Base salary:                  

  • Birr 130,890 per month (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)
