The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) seeks to recruit a Research Officer II will support the project leader in managing and implementing project activities and achieving creative partnerships across public and private sectors to strengthen the contribution of CIMMYT’s climate smart, sustainable intensification, agronomy at scale and smallholder resilience projects for improving the food and nutrition security and climate resilience of smallholder in Ethiopia. The research officer will be involved in development, testing, and promotion of climate smart technologies and practices and scaling them through training of trainers, field demonstrations, digital delivery mechanisms, workshops, meetings, and field days. The employee is expected to travel frequently to several project areas for field experimentation, data collection, monitoring and supporting partner organizations. The employee will be required to undertake preliminary data analyses and to contribute towards the compilation of technical reports. and who be a member of CIMMYT Ethiopia office in Addis Ababa located at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Addis Ababa campus.

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, non-profit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is to encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.

Main duties & responsibilities:            

Management:

  • Liaises with national partners to ensure timely establishment of field trials and data collection;
  • Apply field research techniques and procedures for the implementation of field trials;
  • Collaborate in research activities assigned to adaptation, demonstration, and piloting of climate smart technologies and agronomy at scale innovations;
  • Ensure timely reporting to the project leader, especially of any challenging and unexpected situations during the roll-out of the assigned project for immediate adjustment;
  • Contribute to the timely preparation of project action plans, protocols, guidelines, budgets, and progress reports;
  • Collaborate in the field, and laboratory tasks, as well as in the supervision of temporary staff, to contribute to meeting the objectives of the project;
  • Perform additional management assignments as needed by the project leader.

Technical:

  • Collect and collate data from primary and secondary sources, prepare them for analysis and analyse them;
  • Prepare data management routines, develop electronic data collection templets, and collect data electronically;
  • Collect data from fields, manage databases, conduct statistical analysis of data, and compile summary of the results;
  • Produce spatially explicit maps on data from existing secondary sources and newly generated sources;
  • Involve communication of research findings in the form of literature review, policy briefs and graphic illustration techniques;
  • Translate technical contents to briefs and easily understandable formats;
  • Identify, document, and share project experience, successes challenges and lessons learnt
  • Translate manuals, field guides, and demo materials from English to local languages as required;
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Project leader.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • MSc degree in GIS/remote sensing with trainings/experiences in Agronomy/plant sciences/soil sciences and related disciplines from a highly recognized university
  • Broad/Specialized knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Experience:

  • Five years of work experience in spatial analysis and its application in agricultural development and natural resources management
  • Solid work experience in field research and outreach activities
  • Must have good experience in designing and executing field trials

Skills:

  • Basic understanding of research in smallholder maize and wheat production systems
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office (Excel, power point, Ms word, MS access) and in one or more statistical data analysis software (e.g., R, STATA, GENSTAT, Python, etc.) and in one of the geo-spatial mapping tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, Terra (R), etc.)
  • Teamwork with staff management experience
  • Problem solving skills and strong results-orientation.
  • Proven negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Capacity to work under pressure with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent in English language skills are essential; Communication skills in Amharic and Afan Oromo are desirable.
  • Working experience in data management
  • Fully computer literate

Duty Station:     Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level:   HG 14

Minimum Base salary:  Birr 54,708 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
