Post-Doctoral Scientist – Food Safety and Animal Health

The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Scientist who will support projects situated  in Animal and Human Health program in Addis Ababa.

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Key responsibilities:

  • Plays a lead role in ILRIs research in the Global Burden of Livestock Diseases program, looking to improve our knowledge of livestock disease burden leading to better decisions about the management of livestock diseases;
    • Reviews methods for prioritizing livestock diseases in terms of their economic impact used in countries around the world;
    • Develops improved methods for prioritizing livestock diseases for use by the public and private sectors;
  • Leads the implementation of the food safety research project “Urban food markets in Africa: Incentivizing food safety using a pull-push approach” in Ethiopia under the supervision of the PI
    • This includes designing and implementing field studies with local partners including mixed quantitative and qualitative approaches and supporting laboratory studies;
    • Supporting other aspects of the project will also be required, e.g. supporting food safety interventions;
    • Regular visits to field sites will be required;
  • Plays a significant role in the OACPS One Health (OH) project in Ethiopia and potentially other countries – which may include supporting evaluation of OH, supporting OH training, supporting OH implementation in public and private sectors;
  • Contributes to other food safety, animal health and One Health projects as needed;
  • More generally contribute to the functioning of the Animal and Human Health group particularly in Addis Ababa, providing scientific leadership to junior researchers.

Requirements:

  • Veterinarian or scientist with a PhD and proven track record in research on animal health and veterinary public health such as food safety
  • Animal health or zoonoses policy experience such as disease prioritization methods
  • Research experience on infectious disease control
  • Understanding of livestock production systems in Africa, preferably including Ethiopia
  • Experience in food safety in informal markets desirable, preferably in Ethiopia
  • Fluent in Amharic desirable

Post location: The position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Terms of Appointment

This is position is at job level HG 16 and it is open to both national and international applicants. The position is a 2-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
