ILRI will support the Government of Burundi on improvements to the dairy value chain in Burundi as part of the Integrated Agricultural Development Project for the Great Lakes Region (PRDAIGL) project.  In this context, ILRI, via IITA, is soliciting applications from suitable candidates to fill the position of Livestock (dairy) production officer 

Summary of responsibilities

The overall responsibility of the Livestock (dairy) production officer shall be to coordinate field activities operating in all provinces that have been earmarked  by PRDGAIL project .

The Livestock (dairy) production officer will focus on the following main areas of work:

  • Development of training materials on dairy cattle management, in collaboration with ISABU and other partners as appropriate.
  • Facilitating training activities, including active participation in the training of trainers.
  • Support to national livestock departments in developing disease /pest control calendars for the dairy animals based on disease occurrence, frequency and economic importance this will include control of zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis and tuberculosis.
  • Facilitate field work, organizing focal group discussions , arrangement  of the meeting , access to relevant document including translations from Kirundi into English or French if necessary
  • Supporting farmers to whom improved cattle will be provided and facilitating the distribution of improved dairy cattle that are provided by the project to small holder farmers
  • Responsible for field collection of data, samples and their analyses
  • Dissemination of livestock research results and new technologies to other scientists, extension staff, farmers and NGO’s
  • Contribute to monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • MSc in livestock husbandry sciences, or related discipline
  • At least 5 years’ relevant work experience
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English and French, including ability to write project reports.
  • Digital literacy, with ability to work effectively remotely using digital tools. 

Reporting:

The Market Development officer reports to the ILRI PRDAIGL Dairy VC Coordinator.

Remuneration
The contract will be for an initial period commencing ASAP and ending May 2022, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI/IITA offers a competitive remuneration package.
