The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-doctoral fellow to conduct research on epidemiology and economics of PPR using system dynamics modelling in an interdisciplinary team of social science and biosciences researchers

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.


    • Implement research on PPR: review literature, contribute to research and survey design, prepare datasets, apply modelling procedures;
    • Lead participatory processes to engage stakeholders in model building and data collection;
    • Develop integrated economic/epidemiological frameworks based on system dynamics modelling approaches to target interventions for PPR and assess their effectiveness ex-ante
    • Contribute to the development of risk maps to inform PPR control;
    • Collaborate closely with research partners in planning and carrying out research;
    • Prepare and make presentations on research undertaken, writing up results for publication;


  • A relevant PhD qualification involving applied, empirical modelling of natural systems, including veterinary epidemiology, agricultural/livestock economics, ecology, system dynamics, or geography
  • Experience in Modelling of transboundary animal diseases
  • Experience in risk analysis and risk mapping
  • Understanding of pastoralist systems
  • Hands-on experience of working in the field in possibly difficult circumstances
  • Understanding and use of participatory approaches
  • Knowledge of system dynamics techniques and software (Stella, Vensim)
  • Willingness to work in different countries. A working knowledge (or better) of French highly desirable.

Post location: The position will be based in Dakar, Senegal or Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (tbc)

Position level: This position job level is HG16

Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
