The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Assistant in the vaccines group of the Animal and Human Health programme to work on a GALVmed funded project titled: ‘Towards a subunit vaccine for control of African swine fever’.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious haemorrhagic disease, which affects domestic and wild pigs. It is responsible for serious economic and production losses and is thus a devastating disease for pig-holders in Africa. There is currently no vaccine to prevent ASF and no treatment is available. Current vaccine candidates using attenuated viruses can have the disadvantages of residual viremia and transmission of the vaccine strains. These disadvantages could be avoided by developing a subunit vaccine. Sera and T cells of immune pigs will be used to identify antigens to be included in such subunit vaccine. The identified candidate antigens will be tested for their ability to induce protective immune responses by immunizing with viral vectors expressing the antigens.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.
